MAC

She’s too quiet. I’ve seen Rally in a few different circumstances but I’ve never seen her quiet. Furious, snappy even happy. But not quiet and it makes me shiver. It’s like she’s not even here.

The waitress asks if we’re ready for the check and I nod my head, my eyes drifting around the room until they land on a man off to the side. His eyes haven’t left out table and they’re locked on Rally like a heat-seeking missile. My eyes narrow and I grunt, trying to make sure he knows that she’s taken.

“I need to use the restroom. I’ll be right back.” Rally stands and heads to the dark hallway towards the back. After a minute, the guy stands up and heads back to the men’s room. I shrug. Weird timing.

Fifteen minutes later, I’m starting to wonder if Rally’s snuck out the back. She’s hard to keep a handle on. Just like the storm’s she chases.

I stand and stomp back to the hallway, my eyes blazing with anger when I come around the corner and realize there are two shadows in the hall standing. One is leaning over the smaller shadow and it only takes me seconds to realize it’s Rally and she’s trying to push the asshole off her. Pure, unadulterated rage rips through me and I storm down the hall until I’m just inches from them. Stormy sees me over his shoulder and relief flashes in her dark eyes.

“Asshole,” I growl. “What the hell are you doing, man?”

The guy doesn’t even turn, still focused on Rally’s chest like a slavering dog. A dog that’s about to get neutered.

“Nothing. Just trying to chat with the little lady.”

Rally rolls her eyes. “I already told you to get away from me. I’m not up for a chat with you.”

I tap his shoulder, waiting until he turns to face me. Or my chest. I’ve got a good six inches on him. I bend down and get right in his face, fury cracking the grin on his face. “She’s with me and I don’t share, asshole. And the lady wants you to leave her alone. I suggest you scurry back to your friends like the worthless little rat you are and forget you ever saw her.”

He stiffens. “Or what?”

I growl and step closer. “Or I’m gonna flatten you into that wall until they’ll have to scrape you off with a spatula.”

Rally gasps and I see her dark eyes widen, sensing the danger this idiot is really in. Which he apparently still doesn’t see.

He turns around and shoves at my shoulder. I don’t even flinch. I’ve been tapped harder than that at work.

“What makes you think you can tell her what to do? You her boss, her husband?”

“I’m her boyfriend and if you don’t get away from her, I’m gonna make sure you can only drink your dinner through a straw.”

He snorts then glances back at Rally. And then me. He shrugs. “She ain’t worth the effort of kicking your ass, man.”

I chuckle but it’s dark and grim.
